Overview

The Black Soldier Fly is often referred to as one of the world's most beneficial insects. Only the larvae of the fly feed and adults do not have mouths. They can feed on excrement and human waste, and generate large amounts of protein and fat from their feeding. This makes the larvae very nutritious and able to be fed back to animals as well as processed for human consumption. This helps in reducing waste and in turn creates a nutritious source of protein.

Entomology

Many places around the world consume insects as an alternative protein.

Around 3,000 cultural groups around the world consume bugs as an alternative to traditional protein. Benefits to eating insects are immense. Compared to traditional sources of protein, eating insects has a significantly less harmful effect toward the environment. They consume less natural resources and have a significantly higher proportion of protein. Its also very easy and cheap for people to grow their own insects to supplement their own diets or to feed to their animals. Insects are consumed commonly in certain areas of South America and East Asia.

Black Soldier Fly Background

Black Soldier Flies will lay eggs in compost and manure which hatch after four days. The larvae then stay in that stage for about 22 days, they then crawl up whatever they can find to then become flies. As flies they live for about 8-50 days where they then lay more eggs.

Black soldier fly larvae like hot temperatures between approximately 76 degrees and 88 degrees. We will have to ensure that our container stays insulated while not overheating the flies.

They are larger and will eat the eggs of other types of flies such as house flies, this helps to maintain BSFL dominance and reduces bad smells from the container.

The flies can't eat solid food and thus aren't a nussaince for people.
